Coachella Main Stage

Mesa Post-Apocalypitic Stage

T-Pain’s musical fortress, a sanctuary on the edge of a wasteland, dedicated to rekindling the spirit of live events. The post-apocalyptic stage featured a towering three-story stage standing designed to transform Coachella's main stage into a musical wasteland.

Process Details

The three-tiered set stood three stories tall, with a central staircase slicing dramatically through its core. Built from speakers and found audio objects, T-Pain crafted his home within a desert mesa, channeling the raw spirit of live music. Flanking each side of the towering structure were two sidestages featuring LED walls and swooping faux cable bundles which leaned into the salvaged, improvised aesthetic of the artist’s world. DJ Montay made his home in one of these sidestages, spinning from within a rocky outcrop.

The multi-section stage was primarily constructed from steel framing, painted foam facades, and wood tops. All stage foam was coated in a 1/4" plastic hard coat that is lightweight, flame-resistant, and durable against both impact and weather. Scenic pieces, referred to as “plugs”, fit together like a precise puzzle, french-cleated into the rental decking that served as the structural foundation for each level. Every unit was built on heavy-duty casters and engineered for efficiency, allowing for a full stage transition in under 20 minutes and load-out in just 10.

The modular, road-ready design was rugged enough to support a fully choreographed show with four dancers and a four-piece band, yet nimble enough to be clustered into an organized onstage configuration. Decks broke down into sections that allowed the band’s gear to be preset and line-checked offstage, streamlining the rapid changeover.

To complete the wasteland-inspired world, we fabricated custom drum props and steel pyro cannons, 24" diameter tubes with a rusted patina, housing G-Flame units. This element was a standout collaboration with PyrotecnicoFX. Our team at Dark Moon Designs worked closely with Nappy Boy Entertainment and The Beehive LA from design through deployment at Coachella. A crew of six scenic carpenters brought this ambitious vision to life on site.
