The Last Goodbye

Illuminated Drums + Drumline Masks

We had the honor of developing and integrating a custom wireless lighting system as well as the iconic masks for the ODESZA Drumline. It was an absolute pleasure to help in progressing their presence on stage.

Dark Moon Designs used 3D printing, lighting integration, wireless integration, epoxy, and metal to elevate ODESZA's tour.

The masks worn by the Drumline were derived from a 3D model originally created for ODESZA’s video content. We modified the model significantly, shaping it to fit an average head size and adding space for a viewing window and mounting gear. Once the 3D model was ready for prototyping, we printed several iterations to adjust the scale and learn how to integrate the tinted visor. Once we arrived at a final model we produced a high quality 3D print then casted it to create a mother mold which would enable us to pour multiple resin copies. The resin masks were then post processed, painted, and had visors and headgear installed.

Epoxy resin and other advanced materials were used to make the drumline's masks.

THE ODESZA DRUMLINE

Process Details

The ODESZA creative team had plans to integrate the Drumline in more complex ways on The Last Goodbye Tour; they needed a lighting system with more flexibility. Our solution was to integrate the lighting directly into the drums and enable wireless operation. This gave the creative team unbridled freedom of motion and made the Drumline’s presence in the narrative even more seamless.

We installed LED neon onto a custom frame that sat inside each drum along with a wireless receiver.  A strategically placed transceiver enabled high bandwidth lighting data to be broadcast instantly to the drums, even allowing for strobe effects and blackout moments, all while the performers would move about the stage.
