Dark Moon Designs fabricated eight aluminum frames for SCI’s tour based on Michael Smalley and Chris Ruppel’s design.
A tour is a fast paced operation. Load ins and outs are an everyday task and become second nature to those working to make the show happen. With Michael Smalley’s new design for the String Cheese Incident, the ground package had a specific look that needed to be recreated day after day with ease.
We made custom frames to house five lights each and hold the angle of focus. They travel fully assembled, so forty fixtures become eight with minimal cabling and no position adjustment.
Lightweight Aluminum
To make it easier on the technician we focused on keeping weight to a minimum. Using aluminum over steel was a necessity and having lightweight fixtures gave us more headroom.
A single frame came in at 14 pounds. With all the fixtures and cabling, the entire unit weighed in at 60-70 pounds.
We made a quick jig to ensure each frame was the exact same, as well as make Natalia’s life easier with tacking it all together.
Once the frames were welded they were sprayed with an epoxy paint and bundled with mounting hardware, they were delivered to Brown Note Productions for installation.
