Disney Jr. Live on Tour: Costumepalooza

Terrapin Station Entertainment produced the new Disney Jr Live on Tour show, which was extremely fun to fabricate for. The ability to create a set that would be enthralling for children requires a much different approach than a normal show. Shapes are more exaggerated, colors are bright and playful, and most importantly, the set would be used by dancers and actors in costumes. This was a show where we received a fully realized concept and we just had to fabricate it to tour reliably.

The show is split into halves, act one focuses on Mickey’s Fun House and act two journeys into the Spiderverse. To accomplish this, the massive 14’ buildings rotate 180 degrees during intermission. The Mickey side is designed using elements of the Fun House, with Mickey themed roof tiling, big curves and an LED embellished roofline. These towers use an aluminum cube core structure which is covered in EPS foam and coated with an epoxy resin shell which was then painted to the specific palette required. The rear side of the towers is more like a scenic flat, constructed of MDF and painted to look like skyscrapers in the Spiderverse. The insides of the towers are fully accessible and house the control system for the LED as well as the latches to join the four layers together.

The staircase and slide remain on stage for both acts. The curved staircase is a steel structure which splits in half to better fit in a truck pack. LED strips line the stairs to illuminate the treads and truly create the “Staircase to Anywhere”. We created larger treads to accommodate the performer’s costumed shoes, which ranged from 12”-17”, as well as carefully considered the rise and run in correlation with how much depth of the stage the staircase covered. It was a gentle balance to make sure both the performers and production team were happy.

The slide was mounted to a steel structure and painted to match the palette, while being on wheels so it could roll off and on stage with ease.

The DJ booth was fabricated to look like a boom box and acted as a transitory set piece for the show. It was lightweight and on wheels, so performers had no issue moving it on their own and it was able to pack straight into the truck.

Lastly, we carved the LED Wall header/border out of EPS foam and poured an epoxy coating over for rigidity. We backed this structure with wood for rigging hardware to be installed and used a gripple and aircraft cable system for ease of load in and out everyday.

This tour build used a little bit of everything in our shop and lots of bright colorful paint! We’re happy to create a set that kids will adore and where they’ll have the time of their life.
