BIG BOOTIE LAND

at MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston, MA

Two Friends is among the most creative and professional groups to work with…

They have an eye for design and an emphasis on spectacle. When they reached out to us with an opportunity to design scenic elements for Big Bootie Land and the premiere of their new mix, we jumped at the chance. Their willingness to try new things and their creative input makes for a rich collaborative process that we value deeply.

Design…

We were presented with a theme and a narrative that their protagonist, Big Bootie Man, would follow and we designed a concept around it. Big Bootie man returns to his homeland: Big Bootie Land and discovers that his enemy Assless Jack has been stealing Gluteium Crystals. So we took an integral element of that story and expanded it to a large scale with massive Gluteium crystals that frame the video wall and pepper the stage and DJ booth. We brought Big Bootie Land to the stage for 10,000 people to immerse themselves in the world that Two Friends has created.

We began with a conceptual storyboard to better understand the world presented to us. From there we derived our concept sketches and transferred them into 3D technical renders.

Build…

After illustrating the crystals and getting the style dialed in with UV reactive paint and mirror film accents, we divided the large crystals up into individual 4’x8’ sheets. These needed to be simple in design, lightweight, and quick to assemble. We went back to our theater roots and drafted simple scenic flats that when assembled would take a whole different shape. Every facade was cut with a CNC router and a frame was built to match the shape.

Each crystal that frames the video wall is nearly 20’ tall when fully assembled and the smaller crystals down stage range from 3’ to 6’ tall. This is a great example of how properly scaled and placed flats can fill out a large stage and provide a larger than life result.

With the flats being finished in white, any color from the lighting rig was soaked up and worked as cycs within the stage.

The white is UV Reactive as well, so our paint days we’re done in the dark with UV lights suspended overhead to ensure there were no streaks or missed spots!

Rehearsals took place at the venue the official shows were booked at: the brand new MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston, MA. We were stoked to reunite with the Two Friends team on the East Coast and assist on load ins and outs for the scenic, as well as provide scenic support during the shows.
