The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO hosted a three day film festival, Brucefest, produced by AEG and Black Ink Presents. DMD designed and fabricated an immersive step and repeat for a photo opportunity the guests could enjoy all weekend long.

After researching the cabin from the Evil Dead movies, we adjusted the proportions to fit in a smaller frame while keeping some key details that fans of the series could recognize. Keeping budget and weight in mind, we chose to carve the entire wall out of foam and use our scenic painting skills to sell it as real wood. Lightweight wood jacks and frames provided the necessary structure. A jump-scare effect was integrated into the shutters of the window as well, which automatically rattled on a timer. The roof, while not seen fully in photos, was an important structure as it supported posts which allowed the structure to stand alone. The roof and posts also supported a number of vines which are an iconic element of Evil Dead

This was a very fun build and a nice change from what we’ve been doing more recently. We found ourselves using old scenic skills we haven’t used since high school and it is always good to brush up on the fundamentals.
