"Angelo" the DJ Table

Sometimes, the simplest and most elegant designs present the greatest technical challenges, so much so that the internal skeleton becomes a work of art in its own right. Angelo was that challenge: a 16-foot-wide, 4-foot-deep performance table balanced on two narrow legs. Despite 12 feet of unsupported span in the middle, the table held two performers jumping and running on top of it, while also supporting a full DJ setup including multiple CDJs and a mixer.

Process Details

Our metalwork department had their work cut out for them. To minimize weight, the entire table was built from aluminum. For structural integrity, we used primarily 1/4" aluminum sheets, reserving thinner ⅛” sheets for the downstage and underside areas where load demands were lower.

Despite efforts to reduce mass, the table’s size and durability needs meant the final structure was still hefty. To manage weight while maintaining strength, every internal rib was CNC-cut with custom patterns, allowing blowthrough for maintenance and cable pass-through, while also shedding excess material. These internal channels made it easy to run cables for the mixer and integrated LEDs within the skeleton itself. In the end, Angelo was a beast, strong, sleek, and road-ready. It broke down into five separate pieces for travel. Though it stretched 16 x 4 feet during performance, it compacted to just 4 x 6 feet in the truck.

The final finish: a dark glitter-black shell with a high-gloss clear coat, giving the piece a futuristic edge. Nearly 160 feet of LED neon tape was embedded across every edge and face, turning the table itself into a glowing centerpiece. The lighting system featured five onboard control boxes, requiring only standard True1 power and Ethercon data lines to operate. Designed to mimic a modern moving light fixture, the table was built for ease and efficiency on tour.
